Welcome Father Al

Archbishop Hebda has named a Parochial Administrator to Transfiguration.  Father Al Backmann will join us on Monday, February 5th and will serve as our pastor until July 1st.  As the parochial administrator, Fr. Backmann will have all of the rights and responsibilities as a pastor under canon law.  Fr. Backmann is a retired priest of this Archdiocese and has served in the capacity of parochial administrator for other parishes in recent years.

Father Al grew up in Minneapolis, graduated from North High, and served in the US Army for two years in Korea.  He earned a degree in accounting from the University of Minnesota, worked for General Mills, a large Minneapolis CPA firm, and eventually established his own accounting firm.  His first vocational religious calling was to marriage when he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy, after serving in Korea.  Their marriage was blessed with five children.  Nancy died of cancer in 1989.

Father Al answered his second vocational calling when he entered the seminary and was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis on May 27, 2000.  He served the parishes of St. John Neumann, Immaculate Conception, St. Bridget of Sweden, and as a member of the faculty at St. John Vianney Seminary.  Father Al served at SJV for one year along with Father Baer.  During his time as a parish priest, Father Al also served the Knights of Columbus and as a Spiritual Advisor for Twin Cities Cursillo.  He retired on June 30, 2011, and has been assisting the Archdiocese by serving at parishes as a parochial administrator, and covering for priests on sabbatical.

Father Al will keep the current Confession and Mass schedule, and his first Mass will be at 8 am on Monday, February 5th.  He is eager to get to know you all and meet the Sacramental needs of Transfiguration parishioners.  His first full weekend of Masses will be February 10-11.  We will be announcing all of this in Church and School bulletins, newsletters, and Mass announcements over the next several days.  Also, please read the bulletin each week for an explanation of the Clergy Assignment Board and updates on the process of choosing a new pastor for Transfiguration.
