Annual Father & Son Trip
Over 4 days of spectacular backpacking these men bonded with their sons on a level that not many get to experience. They hiked one of the most prestigious and beautiful backpacking trips in the country covering over 28 miles with almost the entirety of it being over 10,000ft and reaching up to 12,450ft on two of the passes.
One of the Dads on the trip, Jim Burke said "I am very grateful to Transfiguration parish and Justin Kortuem for providing the opportunity for my two sons and I to go on the annual father/son backpacking trip last week in the Rocky Mountains near Aspen, Colorado. It was an awesome experience! The beauty and grandeur of the mountains was incredible. We hiked through the ponderosa pine forests, up through the alpine meadows covered with wild flowers, and over the barren, rocky mountain passes with their spectacular vistas. We forded cold mountain streams rushing with snow melt from the slopes above. And we camped next to a beaver pond and a roaring waterfall. It was an amazing tour of some of God’s most beautiful creations. The trip was a great opportunity for me to spend some uninterrupted time with my boys without all the usual distractions of modern life. We had a chance to talk and joke while hiking the trail, setting-up and breaking camp, prepared meals, pumping and filtering our drinking water from the streams, etc. And at the end of the trip we soothed out aching muscles in the wonderful hot spring pools in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The trip was hard work, but we had a lot of fun. Justin and the other dads were great role models for my boys. It was enjoyable to get to know them and work closely with them as a team. The book that we starting reading during the trip, “Be a Man: Becoming the Man God Created You To Be” by Father Larry Richards, is excellent and I intend to finish reading it now that we are back in the world. I highly recommend this trip to other Transfiguration dads. After this great introduction to backpacking, I’m sure I will be doing other backpacking trips in the future with the rest of my family too."
